We are going to assume that you have followed our first Mendeley Guide and that all is installed and working ok. 

Let's also assume that you have a few PDF articles sitting on your desktop. In the links tab above you will find links to two sample articles you can use. 

When you download articles from a browser the file name is not always helpful. (image 1)

With Mendeley you can import all these confusing files and it automatically finds the metadata (fancy word for the title, author etc) and creates a record in Mendeley desktop and online and then you can cite it in word using the  Cite-O-Matic plugin.

Step 1: Open Mendeley Desktop and sign in.

Click the Add button in Mendeley desktop and navigate to your desktop or download folder and pick a file. If you have lots of articles in a folder, click on the  down arrow on the Add button instead and choose a folder. Click ok and you will see the magic happen. Your papers will all be imported, and the metadata attached. (yes you need internet for this) 

Step 2 : Review the data Mendeley has inserted. 

double check the data. Some Peer reviewed articles will have very correct data that fills in a lot of data, but some Irish interest or mre magazine type articles will have very scanty details and you will need to manually fill them in or search again for the data. In the attached example, example article 1 gets pulled into Mendeley with great data, but not so for article 2. Mendeley highlights this issue. You can click into the missing fields and manually type in the correct data. (image 2)

Step 3: Add In-Text Citations first

Open word and Mendeley desktop. Click sync in Mendeley desktop. Once you click in the Mendeley tab in word and change the style to Cite them Right 10th Edition - Harvard you might get an error message, but you can ignore. 

Click Insert Citation. Make sure the dropdown is on "My Library", search for author, keyword title or year. Click on the result you want and click ok. (Image 3) This inserts the in-text citation to your word document using the reference style you specified.

Step 4: Insert bibliography

(Well officially it's a reference list I think but Mendeley calls it  a bibliography- let me know in the comments if im wrong)

Click Insert Bibliography in the place in your document you want it to appear and it's as simple as that. (Image 5)
